Summary:
A Commodity Manager is a strategic procurement professional responsible for managing the sourcing, procurement, and supply chain activities related to specific commodities or categories of goods. This role involves developing and implementing procurement strategies, negotiating contracts, and building strong relationships with suppliers to ensure the availability of high-quality materials or products.
Essential Functions/Duties and Responsibilities:
- Commodity Strategy Development:
- Develop and implement comprehensive strategies for the procurement of specific commodities.
- Align strategies with organizational goals, considering cost, quality, and supplier capabilities.
- Identify and present new sources of supply to the business.
- Supplier Relationship Management:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers in the assigned commodity category.
- Negotiate contracts, terms, and conditions to optimize cost savings and ensure quality.
- Market Analysis:
- Conduct market analysis for assigned commodities, including monitoring market trends, pricing fluctuations, and emerging technologies.
- Stay informed about changes in the global market that may impact commodity prices.
- Risk Management:
- Identify and assess risks related to the supply chain for assigned commodities.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to address potential disruptions.
- Cost Negotiation:
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and delivery schedules to optimize cost savings.
- Collaborate with suppliers to implement cost reduction initiatives.
- Quality Assurance:
- Collaborate with quality control teams to ensure that purchased items meet specified quality standards.
- Address and resolve quality issues with suppliers.
- Contract Management:
- Draft and manage supplier contracts, including service level agreements (SLAs) and terms of service.
- Ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions.
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and quality control, to understand requirements and specifications.
- Ensure alignment between procurement activities and organizational objectives.
- Technology Integration:
- Leverage procurement technologies and tools, such as e-sourcing platforms and supplier relationship management (SRM) systems.
- Implement technology solutions to enhance procurement efficiency.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement within the commodity management function.
- Implement best practices and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Reporting and Analytics:
- Implement reporting and analytics tools to track key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Generate regular reports on commodity performance for management.
- Project Management:
- Review, evaluate and approve specifications for issuing to suppliers
- Participate in the development of specifications for equipment, products, or substitute materials
- Ensure suppliers are aligned with project technical and commercial requirements by working closely with Engineering, Quality, manufacturing and Project Management.
- Manage key supplier projects to ensure that delivery is completed on time and to budget.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree - Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
- Proven experience as a Commodity Manager or in a similar strategic procurement role.
- In-depth knowledge of commodity markets, procurement strategies, and supply chain management.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex data.
- Familiarity with industry-specific regulations and compliance requirements.
- Proficiency in using procurement software and tools.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and staying abreast of industry trends.
- Ability to travel up to 20% - travel to and working at supplier sites may be required
- Experience with low-cost region sourcing in other countries.
- Work proactively with minimal supervision, reporting as appropriate. A high sense of urgency, accountability, and commitment to delivering value to the organization
- Supplier Long Term Agreement Negotiations Skills & Experience
- Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven track record of negotiation and strong problem-solving skills.
- Competent in using MS Excel (pivots, V-lookups as minimum) and PowerPoint, MRP, and data analytics tools.
- Ability to read technical drawings preferred.
