Solid Oxide Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineer

Location:

Calgary, AB, CA, T2B 3R2

Date:  Mar 13, 2026

FuelCell Energy is a global leader in decarbonizing power and producing hydrogen through our proprietary fuel cell technology. Our mission is to enable a world powered by clean energy. As an innovator and manufacturer of fuel cell clean power platforms, FuelCell Energy has the only technology in the world capable of capturing carbon from an external source and producing power at the same time. In addition, we offer the only technology in the world capable of producing hydrogen, power and water simultaneously.

The pay for this position ranges from $80000 - $92000.

Overview:

We are currently seeking a curious, hands‑on Engineer early in their career to join our Solid Oxide Engineering Group. Most relevant backgrounds would be mechanical, mechatronics, or manufacturing engineering, though other engineering disciplines will also be considered.

In this role, you will work directly on advancing solid oxide electrolyser stack technology, contributing to real hardware that spans mechanical design, equipment and process development, and manufacturing automation. Your work will include designing mechanical components and assemblies, developing tooling and fixtures, and supporting the equipment and automated systems used to manufacture, assemble, and test solid oxide cells and stacks.

You will see your ideas progress from concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and implementation, working close to hardware in laboratory, pilot‑manufacturing, and shop‑floor environments. For early‑career engineers, this position offers an uncommon opportunity to learn quickly by contributing to real products, equipment, and processes that are transitioning into pre‑commercial use. You will quickly contribute to discrete projects while working alongside experienced engineers and scientists across multiple disciplines.

You will be part of a small, dynamic team that works across all aspects of solid oxide stack development—from fundamental modelling and discovery, through mechanical and equipment design, pilot manufacturing and process development, to component and stack testing and data analytics—providing broad technical exposure and accelerated learning. The learning curve can be steep but you will be well supported by the wider team with opportunities to grow your skills and take on increasing technical ownership over time.

This work supports our  production ramp‑up and the continued improvement of our solid oxide fuel cell and electrolysis cell stack technology, meaning your contributions directly help scale advanced energy systems toward real‑world use. Our Calgary‑based operation is developing advanced solid oxide technologies capable of unrivaled hydrogen production efficiencies and is focused on pre‑commercial development and demonstrations, offering the opportunity to work at the intersection of cutting‑edge engineering, manufacturing, and the global transition to clean energy.

Responsibilities:

  • Improve the core solid oxide stack technology, executing projects that progress from conceptual design through detailed mechanical design, prototyping, testing, analysis, and deployment.
  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, tooling, and fixtures used in solid oxide cell, stack, and manufacturing systems, considering tolerances, thermal and mechanical constraints, and design for manufacturability and assembly.
  • Work with automated manufacturing, QC, and testing equipment, contributing to equipment integration, troubleshooting, and improvement; this may include involvement in equipment programming or controls integration depending on project needs and individual strengths.
  • Participate in the realization of new designs and processes, including procurement, mechanical build‑out, assembly, testing, and commissioning activities as required.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks and discrete projects, managing technical scope, timelines, and resources with guidance as appropriate.
  • Collaborate closely with materials science, production, and facilities teams and with external vendors or contractors to implement solutions.
  • Develop and propose innovative technical solutions, drawing on mechanical design fundamentals, hands‑on experimentation, analytical thinking, and practical manufacturing considerations.
  • Communicate progress, results, and technical updates clearly within the team and to stakeholders, and perform other related tasks as assigned.
  • Report to the Director, Solid Oxide Engineering.

Qualifications:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing or Mechatronics areas preferred)

Experience:  0 to 5 years work experience in engineering role with suitability for P.Eng. registration with APEGA. We are willing to work with new graduates who bring enthusiasm and hands-on skills to bear on engineering problems, and we are equally ready to challenge a more experienced engineer with interesting problems.

Ideal candidate must have / Be:

  • A hands‑on engineer with an interest in working close to hardware, equipment, and manufacturing processes
  • Comfort working on the shop floor and in laboratory or pilot‑manufacturing environments
  • Experience or interest in mechanical design, process development, modelling, and data analysis
  • An analytical mindset and willingness to work through complex engineering problems that may require iteration
  • Familiarity with coding and/or modelling tools is an asset
  • Mechanical design experience and understanding of design for manufacturing and assembly principles
  • Experience using 3D CAD software; SolidWorks preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks and contribute to projects in an organized and structured manner
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills when working with internal teams and external partners
  • Willingness and ability to wear required PPE as designated
  • Occasional travel may be required.
